My Communication Style

Hello all Medium visitors! My name is Tiffany Chung and I am a junior at UC Berkeley studying CS. This story is for the tech entrepreneurship class that I am taking this semester as I embark on my journey to become a better leader.

Prompt:

Reflect on your leadership communication with your group today in a 300-word post. How do you currently communicate? What will you start doing as a leader? What will you stop doing? What will you continue doing?

Response:

In the last class we had a session with Astronova students where we were placed in groups of four — two younger students, and two Berkeley students. We played a game called Constellation where the goal was to connect parts of a graph and defeat other teams. The younger students were more familiar with the game than I was, so I asked many clarifying questions. As the game went on, I was able to join in on the discussions on what strategy we should attempt next, and what went well in the last game. In this situation, I mainly took on a listener role as I still was learning about the game.

Although I change my communication style according to different situations I’m placed in, I think a majority of the time I am very people-orientated communicator. I’m friendly, upbeat, and always on the pulse of the latest trends. I thrive on interpersonal relationships, which makes me an ace collaborator. As a people oriented communicator, I also communicate with warmth and optimism. I try to make others comfortable in the situation and encourage them to speak their thoughts. Moreover, I keep an open mind when first considering the ideas and options put forth.

With this communication style, however, at times I feel like I have a hard time with long-term focus and asserting opinion.
