Prompt

Select a leadership book and create a graphic explaining the key leadership idea or framework and write a 300-word piece.

Response

This past week I read Even Warren Buffet’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. “How to Win Friends and Influence People” teaches readers how to connect with people, be more likable, win deals and improve relationships. The book is split into several sections:

1. Fundamental Techniques in Handling People

2. Six Ways to Make People Like You

3. How to Win People To Your Way of Thinking

4. Be a Leader: How to Change People

Where each section is emphasizes a collection of relevant principles. Above, I created a graphic illustrating the 6 principles from the second section. Two of the principles especially stood out to me.

Principle #6: Remember people’s names:

If You Don’t Do This, You Are Headed for Trouble. People love hearing the sound of their own name. Remembering and using someone’s name regularly, is an easy way to make someone feel appreciated and heard. This also means you have to work to remember names when you hear them. To help, you can create a system to remember people’s names when you hear them.

Principle #7: Be a good listener by encouraging others to talk about themselves

An Easy Way to Become a Good Conversationalist. Sometimes we think that being a good conversationalist means coming up with witty stories and funny jokes. However, we like to hear ourselves talk. Ask interesting questions and try to get the other person to open up. Now, this doesn’t mean that you just sit there listening in silence, interviewing your guest. It’s more like an active listening experiences — ask questions, use ‘aha’s’ and ‘wow’s’ and give them nonverbal encouragement.
